SAN FRANCISCO – Last Saturday was an unforgettable and historic day for the Archbishop Riordan wrestling program at the West Catholic Athletic League Championships.
Hosting the annual league tournament within its own Crusader Forum, eight Crusader varsity wrestlers claimed WCAL titles, all 14 varsity wrestlers competing in the league tournament qualified for the Central Coast Section Championships and the Archbishop Riordan varsity team set the WCAL record for team points in a league finals, scoring 285, to claim the tournament championship.
The tournament title came on the heels of the Crusaders going undefeated in WCAL dual competition to claim the regular season championship for the first time in program history. Archbishop Riordan also won the tournament championship back in 2018, so they have now won two of the last three varsity tournament crowns.
Jahmon Burton, Brandon Bigler, Donald Gruda, Jason Tang, Randolph Aberouette, Renato Bezerra, Raymond Russell and Gabriel Martin each won varsity championships for the Crusaders.
Michael Bigler, David Aberouette, William Ortiz, Bo Zhang, Valente Espino and Charlie Morales, along with the aforementioned group of individual champions, will all represent Archbishop Riordan at the upcoming CCS Championships that are set for February 21-22 at Independence.
The freshman and JV wrestling teams finished the season a combined 11-1 in WCAL dual competition and also claimed WCAL dual championships.
